Do you need a customer portal?
The Flip Ledger LLC2 min read

A customer portal is a private area on your website. Each customer signs in with their email and sees only their own information: invoices, documents, messages and project status. Many small businesses have heard of portals, but few know whether they need one.
What a portal does for you
Without a portal, most of your day-to-day business runs through email and text messages. A customer asks where their invoice is. Another asks for a copy of their agreement. A third wants to know whether you received their payment. Every question is a small interruption.
A portal answers those questions without you. Customers can open an invoice, pay it, download the receipt and read past messages whenever they want. You keep a clear record of what was sent and when.
When a portal is worth it
A portal makes sense when you work with the same customers over time, or when each job has documents, payments or approvals attached to it. Examples are service businesses with recurring clients, contractors who send estimates and invoices, property managers, and agencies working on projects.
You probably do not need one if customers contact you once, pay at the time of service and never need a record afterwards. In that case a clear website with a contact form and online payments is enough.
What to think about before you add one
1. How many documents does each customer receive? If it is more than two or three, a portal saves time.
2. Do customers ask you for copies of things? Each repeated request is a sign.
3. Do you need a signed record? A portal can store agreements with the date and the signer's name.
4. Who will manage it? A good portal is simple for you to run, not another system to learn.
You can start small
You do not have to build everything at once. Many businesses start with a website and online payments, then add a customer portal later when the number of customers grows. A good builder will plan the site so the portal can be added without starting over.
