Why owning your website matters
The Flip Ledger LLC2 min read

Many business owners find out too late that they do not own their own website. They pay every month, and if they stop, the site goes away. Here is what ownership should mean.
The four things you should own
Your domain: the web address should be registered in your name, in your own account.
Your hosting account: the place your site runs should be an account that belongs to you.
Your code: you should receive the full source code, not a locked-in platform.
Your data: customer and project information should stay in your own accounts.
Why it matters
If your builder disappears or raises prices, you can take your site to someone else. If you want changes later, any developer can work with your code. Your customers' information stays under your control.
What to ask before you hire anyone
- Whose name is the domain registered in?
- Whose account does the site run in?
- Will I receive the source code?
- What happens if I stop working with you?
- What are my ongoing costs, exactly?
How we do it
At handover, we set up your domain, hosting and data accounts in your name and launch the finished site on your domain. After final payment, full ownership transfers to you. You get your code and a short guide to your accounts. There is no monthly fee to us and nothing is locked to us. Your only ongoing cost after launch is your domain renewal.
If you are comparing options, ask these five questions of everyone, including us.
